Monuments

Monuments of note include the Mestizaje, which glorifies the origins of the mestizo race; Bandera (‘flag’) with its obelisk and three figures; Pescador (‘fisherman’), a structural ode to the occupation of many of the region’s inhabitants; and the city’s working lighthouse or faro.

The Club de Yates (yacht club) is a center of activity for this city-on-the-bay. There’s a lot of coming and going on the water and along the Hondo River, the natural border between Mexico and Belize.

Chetumal has recently come alive. Both energy and imagination is being spent on the look and life of the city. The waterfront boulevard is a popular meeting place and there are plenty of parks and gardens. The locals are also encouraged to build in the traditional style, and preserve any example of original Caribbean architecture that is still standing.
