Chakanbakán

Chakanbakán (‘in the middle of the savanna’ or ‘surrounded by the savanna’) is located very near the town of Caoba (93 km from Chetumal) en route to Escárcega. The site is currently under excavation. Chakanbakán is important for its antiquity, and for having one of the greatest collections of giant masks in the Maya World. The structure called Nohoch Balam was built between 300 and 50 B.C. and shows Olmec influence. Its rubble foundation is skillfully plastered with stucco, a technique associated with Peten-style architecture. Experts believe the masks represent deities with close links to the jaguar, an animal the Maya greatly revered.
