Founded by the Spaniards in 1687 as Santa Rosa de Chichanhá, the settlement had the largest indigenous population of any town in what is today Southern Quintana Roo. Chichanhá was also the headquarters or district seat of the (church) missions established for the area which was known as the "pimienta (pepper) region."
Chichanhá had a violent history. It was the site of bloody confrontations during the Caste War and finally abandoned due to continued hostility from the Maya. After that it fell into obscurity until ‘discovered’ early in this century by researchers such as Maurice de Perigny and Eric Thompson.
In a jungle clearing lie the remains of a late-17th-century Franciscan church.
