Quintana Roo is one of Mexico's youngest states and it has the fastest growth rate. In 2000, the population was just over 870,000, of which 45% were born here and the rest are from other parts of Mexico or are foreigners. The state is divided into eight municipal districts (municipios): Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres, Solidaridad (Riviera Maya), Cozumel, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Othón P. Blanco (Chetumal), José María Morelos and Lázaro Cárdenas.
