Poor soils hinder agricultural development and commercial farming is restricted to the south, on the shores of the Hondo River, where sugar cane, rice and citrus fruit are cultivated. Tourism is the most important economic activity and the state's leading source of income and commerce ranks second. Other activities are fishing, ranching, beekeeping and forestry.
