Aluxes

These are tiny spirits (different sources describe them as children or old men) who wander through the corn fields and forests waylaying men and asking them for food. If farmers ignore their requests the alux will wreak havoc on his corn and may also spread sickness, steal or break things. However if the farmer makes offerings of food, the alux will become the guardian spirit of his field and protect it from thieves. Some people believe that the aluxes were originally clay idols placed in ancient temples throughout the area and that they came to life.
