A number of different architectural styles are evident in Quintana Roo's Mayan sites, some show foreign influences which are the result of cultural contacts with city states in the Petén (Tikal) and Southern Campeche (Calakmul). Buildings at Kohunlich and Dzibanché are a blend of Petén and Río Bec building styles and Cobá is also Petén in inspiration. Coastal centers such as Tulum, Xel-Há, Muyil, Tankah and El Rey exhibit the East Coast architectural style which is characterized by low buildings with smooth friezes, columns, flat or vaulted roofs and walls that have a slight outward tilt.
