Quintana Roo is the easternmost state of the Yucatán Peninsula, and its territory (50,843 km2) is a patchwork of ecosystems, rich in wildlife. From the air large parts of the state resemble a green carpet: this is the tropical forest about which so many tales have been spun. A land of great trees such as mahogany, cedar and chicozapote, it is the domain of the jaguar, monkeys still forage in the canopy and birds are abundant.
Towards the coast the jungle gives way to marsh, mangroves and a series of lagoons and bays where fresh water from underground rivers mixes with salt water. The reed beds and mangroves are home to birds such as herons and ibis; crocodiles and manatees can also be spotted.
The white beaches of the Mexican Caribbean are protected by a chain of coral reefs. Marine life is abundant, around 500 species of fish have been identified in the area. The islands of Holbox, Contoy, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel lie offshore.
The reserves in the state include Sian Ka'an and Cozumel Marine Park.
