Mangroves and marshes

One of the most important ecosystems in the state, mangroves and marshes are found along the coast and on the banks of the Hondo River. Mangroves are rich in flora and fauna and their immense value to coastal ecology is only just being understood. They harbor a variety of insects, crustaceans, small reptiles and amphibians which are a food source for wetland birds. The shallow, nutrient-rich waters are also important fish spawning areas. Moreover, the buttress roots of the mangrove anchor sediments thus preventing coastal erosion. Many birds make their home in area mangroves, including 15 members of the heron and egret family, ibis and roseate spoonbill. Pelicans, osprey and frigate birds can also be seen. Crocodiles, crabs and frogs dwell in the channels that meander through the mangroves and in lagoons.
