Limited in extension but ecologically important, the savanna is a strip of seasonally flooded marshland adjoining the mangroves. It consists of thorn forest, grasslands peppered with acacia or palm trees, stands of dyewood and reed beds. Small islands of jungle, rich in wildlife, are scattered across the landscape. Located on slightly higher ground, usually around a cenote, peténes or hummocks are found only on the Yucatán Peninsula, in Cuba and Florida. The largest area of savanna is in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
