The reefs that hug the Quintana Roo coast are the foundation for an ecosystem as complex as it is fragile. This world of beauty is inhabited by around 500 species of fish of all shapes, sizes and a kaleidoscope of colors, sponges, molluscs, crustaceans such as the spiny lobster, starfish, sea urchins and algae. Stretches of the reef are popular with divers, either because they are particularly beautiful or are easy to reach, for example the reefs in the Cancún-Isla Mujeres area, Cozumel, along parts of the Riviera Maya and Sian Ka'an shoreline or the Chinchorro Bank which is also a ships' graveyard.
