Dyewood

Also known as Campeche or logwood, Haematoxylon campechianum grows in marshy areas and reaches heights of between 8 and 15 meters. Its bark and wood yields a rich reddish-brown dye once used in the European textile industry. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, galleons laden with the wood set sail from the Yucatán bound for Spain. Pirates got wind of the rich cargos and attacked the ships repeatedly. Then some of them decided to strike out and engage in the lucrative business themselves. Logwood camps were founded on the island of Tris in the Laguna de Términos in Campeche, in Southern Quintana Roo and in Belize.
