A deep pink variety of the flor de mayo (Plumeria rubra) or the frangipani of the tropics is native to the Yucatán Peninsula. The kitamche (Caesalpina gaumeri) is a member of the acacia family which bears lovely yellow or red flowers with orange spots. Other plants with striking flowers are the ziricote or cordia (deep orange) and the coastal spider lilies. Many flowering trees have insignificant blooms that exude a strong perfume making them attractive to bees. Trees and shrubs from other tropical regions of the world such as hibiscus, flamboyant, cassia, allamanda, oleander, ixora, bougainvillea and beaumontia also abound in the parks and gardens of the state.
