A variety of sea and water birds congregate in the dunes and wetlands along the Quintana Roo coast. The great blue, boat-billed and green heron, ibis and spoonbill are among the waders found in the mangroves while the coast is patrolled ceaselessly by pelicans, frigate birds, gulls and terns. A few pairs of the extremely rare jabiru stork, the largest bird in the Americas, can occasionally be spotted in remote areas of southern Quintana Roo.
In the north of the state, the island of Contoy is an important bird sanctuary and the coastal lagoons of Yalahau and Chacmochchuc attract flocks of flamingos that filter the sediments in the shallows for the tiny crustaceans that are their staple food.
