The coastal waters of Quintana Roo are rich in marine life. The reefs fringing the Caribbean shoreline are home to innumerable fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Reef-dwelling fish include the colorful angel, tang and sergeant major as well as red snapper, hogfish, grouper, bass and dogfish, all exploited by local fishermen. Other species of commercial value are crustaceans such as the spiny lobster and shrimp, and molluscs like the octopus and pink conch.
The mangroves, lagoons and cenotes are inhabited by countless fresh water species, some of which are endemic like the cave-dwelling blind fish.
