At dawn the state's forests echo to the sound of bird calls. In fact, the Yucatán Peninsula is one of the world's most important bird areas, there are more species in the region than in the United States and Canada combined and their number is swelled every winter by the arrival of countless migrants. Furthermore, scientists have recorded more species in southern Quintana Roo than in the whole of Europe and a number of endemic varieties.
Jungle dwellers include the toucan, parrot, ocellated turkey, great curassow, chachalaca and the striking motmot.
