The jungle is a complex ecosystem and home to a bewildering array of wildlife. The state's burgeoning population and other factors such as deforestation have had a detrimental effect on the landscape, and have pushed some species of animals to the brink of extinction.
However, despite the gloomy scenario, area jungles still harbor a range of mammals from mice, shrew and bats to the five members of the feline family: jaguar, ocelot, margay, puma and jaguarundi. Other jungle dwellers include deer, anteater, agouti, armadillo, coatimundi, tapir, peccary, kinkajou, spider and howler monkeys. Chetumal Bay and the Hondo River are a refuge for otters and the state's largest mammal, the manatee.
